Who is responsible for lights and street lighting in the Halifax Regional Municipality?

The Nova Scotia Power Corporation owns and maintains the following streetlights:
Streetlights in the former City of Dartmouth
Streetlights in the former town of Bedford
Streetlights in the former Halifax County
All parking lot lighting
All of the streetlights on any private streets/roads
Walkway lights (if outside the former City of Halifax)

The Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Public Works is responsible for all streetlights on the 100 series highways, as well as the streetlights on the Circumferential Highway from the MacKay Bridge to Pleasant Street.

The Halifax Regional Municipality owns and maintains all streetlights within the boundaries of the former City of Halifax (as indicated on the map below) and all of the HRM Park and Open Space areas.

What do I do if I want a new street light on my street?

If you wish to request a new street light, please contact your district councillor, or call 490-4000. This applies to both public and private streets throughout HRM.
